An often mentioned function of coaching is to facilitate the client’s personal
growth, a rather broad and some even say vague term. What then is
‘personal growth’?
I see it as referring to an improvement in a person’s way of thinking, feeling
and behaving that leads to their improved well-being i.e. going past their
previously unhelpful ways of being.
When a person grows, they are more independent and able to take
responsibility for their experience of life. They are more open to new
(different) experiences and able to accept and take risks and direct their
lives. They become more authentic in the way they relate to themselves
and others i.e. they are more connected with who they are.
They also value close relationships more and are more patient, tolerant,
understanding and compassionate when relating to others (and themselves).
They become more giving and forgiving. They are able to see the bigger
picture of their lives and give appropriate weight-age to each challenge and
moderate an otherwise exaggerated reaction.
